A Gore Tex membrane over the breather holes between two cylindrical metal shields provides the necessary water resistance and breathability for an oxygen sensor. Designing the crimp die to introduce a natural squeeze effect achieves a consistent tight fit between the ceramic core and the inner shield. A as segment die has three tight spots. One tight spot on the die meets one of four right spots on a square ceramic, and the other two tight spots on the die meet air pockets. The metal deforms around the ceramic while the ceramic self adjusts to equilibrium. This design reduces the material requirements of the Gore Tex membrane and outer shields. Crimping through one metal thickness instead of two reduces the compression variation in the cable seal.
