Environmental pollution from viscose yarn production processes can be reduced if the cellulose is dissolved directrly and not obtained by chemical reactions involving sulfur compounds. The monohydrate of N-methyl morpholine-N-oxide (NMMNO) is the most suitable solvent for direct cellulose dissolution. Research at the Thuringian Institute of Textile and Plastic Research has concentrated on the formation of cellulose from NMMNO solutions and the development of new products. Cellulose tape films were produced thrugh slot dies from solutions of cellulose in NMMNO monohydrate. These tapes were used to produce agricultural binder twine with excellent strength. 17 refs.
