The three types of backings used in the carpet industry include precoat, anchor coat, or back sizing; secondary or jute backing; and foam backing. Precoat, anchor coat, and back sizing involve the application of a latex compound with a lick roller or knife blade to anchor individual tufts to the primary woven fabric backing. Secondary jute backing involves lamination of a jute fabric to the back of a carpet using a latex compound with good adhesive properties. Foam backing involves latex precoating and subsequent latex foam coating of the backing using the sodium silicofluoride system, the heat sensitized gelling system, or a nongel foam process. The types of latex used for carpet backing are natural rubber latex or carboxylatex/SBR latex. 6 refs.
