Experimenters fabricated a series of short fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites with a novel fiber alignment method that employed hydrodynamic flow through a multi-ply staggered mesh. Tests compared the tensile strength and elastic modulus of composites that were reinforced with the hydrodynamically aligned fibers with the corresponding properties of composites reinforced with randomly oriented fibers. Results indicated that the aligned short fiber composites were twice as strong as the randomly oriented composites along the axis of alignment. The test data appeared to be independent of fiber aspect ratio or volume fraction.
