The introduction of high performance fibers for the production of industrial fabrics with narrow specifications has driven the manufacturers of needled nonwoven machinery to achieve higher efficiencies and capabilities in their designs. The changes that Asselin has made to its Profile crosslapper illustrates this trend. Servomotors that eliminate mechanical drives permit precise adjustment to the profile of the batt at the lap output. Speeds of up to 120 meters per minute are possible. a PC compatible computer controls all operations of the crosslapper, including the advance of the floor apron, width setting, and output speed. The major innovation of the Profile crosslapper is its direct production path with a length of about two-thirds less than than of conventional crosslappers. The web is directly laid down onto the delivery apron without deformation due to this short path.
