NHK Spring Company recently introduced a method for fabricating resilient cushioning material. The new method involves impregnating high loft polyester fibers with an aqueous polyurethane emulsion, followed by thermal during. The emulsion derives from the reaction of polyetherpolyol with toluene diisocyanate and epoxy resin at 80 degrees centigrade for 4 hours. The reaction produces a polyurethane emulsion with a nonvolatile content of 30 percent. The Yokohama based company claims that its new method is particularly effective for manufacturing upholstered automobile cushions. The NHK method bears United States patent number 5,021,286.
