Textiles used in automobiles represent a significant percentage of the technical textiles market. Polyester and nylon are by far the most frequently used fibers in automobiles for such uses as seat covers, roof and door liners, carpet, trunk liners, and seat belts. In seat covers, a growing trend toward circular knit fabrics exists because of their versatile designs, excellent fit, and controllable elasticity. In floor coverings, excellent fit, and controllable elasticity. In floor coverings, tufted fabrics are superceding needled fabrics, particularly with the use of polypropylene. Emissions from automotive fabrics is a problem that can be reduced by such strategies as the use of nonreactive, nonvolatile additives. Recycling of textiles from scrapped automobiles is not yet widely practiced because of linited facilities and the extensive sorting required.
