An experiment evaluated the effect of oxidative embrittlement on the impact behavior of Nicalon reinforced CAS II ceramic matrix composites. Tests focused on the impact resistance of samples that were loaded to a microcracking yield ratio of 1.0 and heated to 600 degrees centigrade for 10 hours. Results showed that oxidative embrittlement had a negative effect on the maximum stress and dynamic fracture toughness of the CAS II composites. A comparative analysis revealed that specimens reinforced with mica coated Nicalon fibers were more susceptible to oxidative embrittlement that specimens reinforced with standard Nicalon fibers.
