An experiment examined the mechanical interaction between carbon fibers and cement base matrix in fiber reinforced composites. Mathematical models showed that the microstructure of the fiber/cement interface influenced the tensile strength and flexural properties of the composite. A digitally controlled MTS load frame subjected a series of sample composites to fiber pull out tests. Scanning electron microscopy analyzed microstructural cracking and interfacial debonding. The test data facilitated the derivation of interphase strength parameters. Results suggested that novel high performance carbon fiber reinforced cement matrix composites could be fabricated by optimizing the values of the parameters.
