Biodegradability of Papers Reinforced with Resins.

The relationship between the composition of paper and epoxy resin composites, their biodegradability, and their reinforcement properties were examined. Preparation of the composite involved immersing sheets of paper in an epoxy resin diluted with ethanol, followed by pressing and crosslinking at 120 degrees centigrade for 20 minutes. The wet and dry strengths of the composites showed maxima at certain resin conterts. Biodegradability. Only low concentration solutions permeated into the pulp fibers. The resin weakened interfiber hydrogen bonding during impregnation, which led to a strength decrease. 10 refs.
