Selective evaporation through a membrance composed of hollow polysulfone fibers successfully dehydrated acetic acid. The double coagulation bath method produced polysulfone membranes with an effective selective layer thickness of 2.5 micron. The lengths and diameters of the membrane fibers influenced the permeability of the membrane. The limiting sizes of the hollow fibers were 1 millimeter external diameter and 0.6 millimeter internal diameter. More than 50 percent of the resistance to mass transfer of the membranes was concentrated in a porous layer. The selective layer of the membrane had a critical thickness that depended on the characteristics of the polymer and the solvent. 7 refs.
