Hot gas filtration is an excellent phase separation process because of its long term durability to temperatures of up to 250 degrees centigrade. Filters for the removal of fly ash in flue gas emissions from coal fired boilers and waste incinerators operate in this temperature range. To withstand these temperatures, as well as corrosive chemicals, special fibers and/or blends of aramid, teflon, glass, and/or ceramic fibers are optimal in these filters. The manufacture of these filters generally involves carding, cross laying, and needling. Shrinkage and heat setting treatments ensure dimensional stability, which is essential for reproducibility of shape and performance after cleaning. Brueckner's lines for heat setting and sintering include a multilayer tenter and a tenter with a tunnel and conveyor belts.
