Dow Seeks Added Value from New Products.

Dow Chemical recently introduced four polyethylene (PE) based plastics: Dowlex IP 90 and IP 2580, for injection molded storage containers; Dowlex IP 42, for housewares; and Dowlex IP 22, a general purpose resin. According to the company, the new products significantly advance the ability to control molecular weikght distribution during PE synthesis. Using metallocene catalysts to influence chain length during the polymerization of ethylene, Dow researchers successfully mixed long PE chains (which enhance impact resistance) with short PE chains (which enhance processability) at preset ratios. Dow claims that drinking cups fabricated from Dowlex IP 90, although 20 percent thinner than comparable cups, are equally as strong. Dow hopes that its new technology will appeal to companies that are affected by increasingly stringent waste disposal standards.
