Arc reduction of quartz sand yields silicon, which reacts with organic chlorides to produce chlorosilanes. These chlorosilanes hydrolyze to yield silicones. Silicones are excellent lubricants for metals and plastics at temperatures ranging from-70 to 200 degrees centigrade. Typical applications include lubrication of electric motors, conveyors, and textile spindles. Favorable properties at both high and low temperatures make silicone oils excellent heat transfer liquids. 4 refs.
