In recent years, about 10 million automobiles have ben produced annually in the United States, and about 15 million annually have been produced in Western Europe. A major trend in automotive fabrics is the use of yarn dyed fabrics. Yarn dyed fabrics are preferred because of their ability to satisfy both newer lightfastness requirements and quick style changes. Nylon and polyester are used frequently in automotive fabrics because they can withstand the extreme conditions to which automobiles are subjected. Premetallized 1:2 acid dyes are used to dye nylon fibers because they achieve the highest lightfastness ratings for nylon. Disperse dyes and a few azoic dyes are used to dye polyester fibers. Important points to consider when dyeing polyester fibers are hydrophobicity, proper pH, water hardness, dispersing and leveling agents, and lightfastness.
