Nondestructive Tests on Polymer Composites Via the Analysis of Acoustic Emission.

Acoustic emission characterized glass, carbon, and aramid fiber reinforced polyester composites in the initial, nondestructive range of tensile, bending, and compressive stresses. The acoustic emission method determined the interfacial damage of the composite and evaluated the quality of the fibrous reinforcement finish as well as the ultimate mechanical strength of the composite. The acoustic emission results compared favorably with bending modulus and damping decrement measurements of polymer composites. 4 refs.
