The accuracy of the standard accelerated lightfastness test method for automotive interior materials (SAE J1885) is questionable because samples are exposed to short wavelength ultraviolet energy that may cause anomalous results. The High Irradiance Test is an alternative method that uses a filtered xenon arc light source. This light source more closely duplicates the spectral power distribution of typical sunlight behind glass. An evaluation of the effectiveness of this method used samples of three different polyester fabrics dyed with 31 disperse dyes. In addition to the High Irradiance Test and SAE J1885, an outdoor exposure test (SAE J2229) was performed. For most of the samples, the data from the three tests were comparable. However, in cases where SAE J1885 was not predictive, the performance of samples tested with the High Irradiance Test showed good agreement with the outdoor exposure test. 17 refs.
