A new, rapid method indirectly tests the water vapor permeability of textiles by measuring the reduction in surface resistance of a thin absorber positioned on the sample. Water vapor permeability is an important property in both apparel and industrial textiles. The method involves subjecting the sample to a drop in water vapor pressure. The system consists of several layers of wet filter paper that act as a moisture dispenser, a layer of highly vapor permeable, but waterproof Goretex membrane, the sample, and a layer of dry filter paper that acts as an absorber. Water sorbed by the dry filter paper increases its electrical conductivity and decreases its surface resistance. The faster the surface resistance decreases, the more water vapor permeable is the sample. 17 refs.
