Industrial boilers that use natural gas produce 87 percent of total nitrous oxide emissions. New regulations mandating the reduction of these emissions are driving research on low nitrous oxide steam generation technologies. Nitrous oxide is the combustion byproduct of nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide. Thermal nitrous oxide is the major type generated by industrial boilers. Combustion modification is the lowest cost strategy to reduce these emissions. Donlee Technologies and the Gas Research Institute have developed the TurboFire XL ultralow nitrous oxide steam boiler, which consists of a cyclonic burner firing into a cylinder of water tubes. The American Gas Association Laboratories' low nitrous oxide burner lowers emissions by completely mixing fuel and air, adding higher than normal excess air. Altex Technologies and Cleaver Brooks are developing a low nitrous oxide burner for firetube boilers.
