Chlorination processes that are used generally for water purification produce trihalomethanes and other toxic chemicals and are not completely effective in destroying viruses. An alternate process replaces chlorine with pyridinium derivatives. N-Benzylpyridinium bromide and N-benzylpyridinium chloride are the most effective. The process uses a purification system that consists of a nonwoven filter coated with a small quantity of the pyridinium derivative. The system is effective even against bacteriophages and human pathogenic viruses. A water soluble pyridinium derivative also has strong antimicrobial activity, coagulating and sedimenting microbial cells suspended in water. 28 refs.
