European Commission (EC) planners recently proposed eco-label criteria that are based on a cradle to grave approach: assessments of the environmental impact of an industrially produced item would include the provenance of its raw mateials, the energy used in its manufacture, and the cost of its disposal or recycling. Many textile manufacturers worry that the EC eco-label criteria may be too strict. For example, an independent consulting firm in Denmark, dk-Teknik, submitted a 30 page report to the EC listing more than 40 processes in the life cycle of cotton and cotton/polyester textile products that adversely impact the environment. The report suggested that eco- labeled cotton be grown without irrigation and without artificial fertilizers. Most industry analysts maintain that the dk-Teknik rcommendations represent an extremely radical viewpoint, and hope that the EC will settle on regulations resembling the BS 7750 standards that were recently adopted by the United Kingdom.
