According to a recent ATMI survey of 348 textile mills and manufacturing facilities, the United States textile industry doubled its solid waste recyclig capability during the past five years. In 1988, 23 percent of solid waste was recycled, with 70 percent sent to landfils; in 1992, 43 percent of solid waste was recycled, 39 percent sent to landfills, and the remainder disposed of by other methods. In 1992, textile mills recycled 96 percent of heavy metals, 92 percent of fiber waste, 88 percent of carding waste, 85 percent of assorted rags, 73 percent of fabric waste, and 64 percent of wood pallets. The ATMI survey attributed the icnrease to public awareness of environmental concerns; improved markets for waste products; the cooperative recycling of metal, plastic, and fiber drums; and the ATMI Encouraging Environmental Excellence Program, which allows textile companies that meet specific environmental guidelines to display a logo identifying them as leaders in environmental preservation.
