Researchers used various methods to measure the degradation rates of two biodegradable plastics: Mater-Bi, a biodegradable polymer alloy derived from cellulose and modified polyvinyl alcohol; and pclycaprolactione (PCL). The researchers buried Mater-Bi and PCL samples for periods ranging from 1 to 30 days in soils that had been taken from locations throughout Japan. A hydrolysis test in which samples were immersed in 6 molar hydrochloric acid for 2 hours proved to be the best method for quantitatively assessing the biodegradation of Mater-Bi. A photoirradiation test, in which samples were exposed to ultraviolet light for 17 days, proved to be the best method for quantitatively assessing the biodegradation of PCL. 6 refs.
