Japanese researchers plotted the sedimentary distribution of anaerobic bacteria that degrade PHB. The researchers inoculated anaerobic enrichment cultures containing fibrous PHB with 102 samples of bacteria that were collected from 17 sampling points througout the southern part of the lbaraki prefecture and the northern part of the Chiba prefecture. In 61 of the 102 cultures, the fibrous PHBs disintegrated into powder. Analyses of the residual PHB, the culture broth, and generated gases confirmed that the PHB was degraded by anaerobic bacteria. Over time, the formation of volatile fatty acids as the main fermentation products suppressed biodegradation in closed systems. The plot showed that the most effective PHB destroying bacteria tended to inhabit anaerobic bottom sediments. 21 refs.
