Part Two of a two part article on recycling automotive polypropylene and polyester carpeting fabrics addresses the commercial development of the film extrusion process. The film extrusion process recycles carpeting waste into a thermoplastic backcoating for automotive end uses. Analysis determined that chopping the carpeting waste in a particle granulator equipped with a screen filter measuring 0.125 inch or less was a technically feasible and practical method for converting the waste into a form suitable for downstream recycling. The extrusion backcoating of the granulated waste onto a carpet substrate at widths of 31 and 53 inches produced laminated carpeting that could be successfully molded into automotive trunk liners. Granulating the waste followed by long staple air laid web formation on a 40 inch wide unit produced materials suitable for making industrial wipes, interlinings, automotive paneling, and upholstery backing fabrics.
