A research project investigated the performance of oriented polypropylene tapes containing recycled polymer. Isplen PP040 was the virgin polymer used in the experiments. To produce simulated recycled waste, researchers re-extruded and peletized the Isplen PP040 up to 10 times. Re-extruded pellet collection for combination with virgin polymer occurred after 2, 5, and 10 cycles. The researchers also obtained and re-extruded industrial polypropylene waste obtained from Cabot Plastics Limited. Heat and ultraviolet stabilizers enhanced the durability of the recycled polymers. Tape production took place on a Labine Mk-1 production unit. Tests of the tapes containing recycled polymer indicated that the recycled content had a significant impact on oriented tape properties, but useful tapes with acceptable tenacities could be produced even without the addition of stabilizers. The addition of stabilizers, however, improved tensile strength retention and the melt flow index. A stabilizing system comprising a primary hindered phenol and a secondary organic phosphite antioxidant effectively reduced oxidation caused by the addition of recycled polymers. 6 refs.
