The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimated that air bags have reduced driver deaths in frontal crashes by nearly 26 percent. The predominant fibers currently used in the air bag industry are nylon 6 and nylon 66, although many industry analysts are encouraging manufacturers to reevaluate the use of polyester to lower costs. The air bag fabric market has expanded rapidly in recent years, due to mandates that require all new cars and light trucks in the United States to be equipped with both passenger side and driver side air bags by 1998. Lower production rates and efforts by the automotive industry to reduce scrap will temper growth in the United States air bag market. Potential future markets include side bags and rear seat bags, aftermarket installation in fleet cars, and export markets.
