In 1992, 3.5 billion pounds of carpet will be disposed, according to industry estimates. Allied Fibers is focusing its attention on recycling the used nylon 6 carpeting that is crowding our nation's landfills. Collection and retrieval of the used carpet carpet presents the biggest problem facing potential recycling efforts. The goal set up by Allied is to have a recycling process in which the properties of recovered materials have very high integrity. Allied's plan will use caprolactam to produce a high-qualty yarn, and it will close the loop on the products' lifecycle, allowing indefinite reuse without disposal. Allied Fiber's recycling coordinator, Edward Duffy, thinks that alliances and roles will shift the carpet industry works to solve recycling problems.
