Secondary heat treatment of some polymers used in carpet yarns decreases shrinkage in downsteam processes, particularly dyeing. heat treatment occurs after the yarn has been drawn and textured. The yarn passes through a low-tension zone where it is heated by microwaves. Heat treatment relaxes stresses in the fiber structure that would lead to shrinkage. Following the heat treatment, the yarn is wound onto packages.
