Layers of carbon fiber composite prepreg were sewn together to examine the effect on flexural performance. Layers were hand-laid conventionally and, prior to curing in an autoclave, were sewn together with a range of reinforcing threads. A small but significant improvement in flexural performance was achieved, particulary when the layers were sewn together with a ball-point needle with fine polyester yarn. At the same time, a slight loss of maximum deflmction at failure was shown, which may affect energy-absorption capabilities. The percentage of through-the-thickness reinforcement that could be inserted was considerably limited. Resin pick-up resulted in problems during sewing. 5 refs.
