Tokyo Gas KK and Ashimorl Kogyo have developed a lining to prevent rupture of underground pipes during earthquakes. The lining, which is described in United States patent 5 077 107, is comprised of a tubular textile jacket and a layer that is impervious to air. The woven fabric textiles jacket is made of high-tenacity polyester warp yarns that are chemically resistant and have an elongation of about 10 percent. The weft yarns are made of low elongation, high tensile strength carbon yarns that have a Young's modulus of at least 7,000 kilograms per square millimeter. The tubular jacket material is impregnated with a reaction-curing resin, usually epoxy resin. The materials used in the air-impervious layer depend on the application of the pipeline.
