The cement industry requires filter media to prevent environmental pollution and the loss of costly cement dust. A needlepunched polyester nonwoven fabric was tested for its ability to serve as a filter media for cement dust. The fabric was selected because of its high permeability and filtration efficiency, its tendency to resist binding, its lack of yarn slippage, and its good gasketing and cake discharge characteristics. Dust filtration efficiency, air permeability, pressure drop, and cleaning efficiency were tested with a simple apparatus. An increase in fabric weight, needling density, or depth of penetration resulted in a decrease in air permeability, but an increase in filtration efficiency, pressure drop, and cleaning efficiency.
