Time resolved, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) with a synchrotron source and time resolved, small angle light scattering studied a series for linear low density polyethylene blown films. Experiments obtained scattering patterns and load extension curves simultaneously during deformation. The initial orientation of the film relative to tensile axis was important to the operative elastic deformation modes. Evidence of lamellar separation occurred in films drawn parallel to the transverse direction, whereas films drawn parallel to the transverse direction demonstrated interlameller shear. In films drawn at 45 degrees to the machine direction, SAXS showed evidence of lamellar stack rotation. In all samples, yield point corresponded to the activation of crystallographic deformation and the onset of crystalline lamella disruption. 28 refs.
