Experiments blended a rigid polymer (sodium alginate (SA)) and a flexible polymer (polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)) to prepare membranes for pervaporation separation of ethanol and water mixtures. With the SA membrane, flux decreased significantly and the separation factor increased as a result of polymer chain relaxation. The PVA membrane, however, demonstrated a consistent performance during pervaporation. Compared with the nascent SA membrane, the blend membranes had an improved mobility by which relaxation during pervaporation could be decreased. Experiments investigated the effects of operating temperature and PVA content on membrane performance and the extent of relaxation. Scanning electron microscopy observed the morphology of the membranes. 11 refs.
