Researchers investigated the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of electrical resistivity for an epoxy resin filled with carbon fibers (CF). The upper limit temperature of the PTC region depended strongly on CF content. An increase in CF content increased the upper limit temperature of the PTC region. Researchers proposed a phenomenological model to explain the PTC effect. Cure temperature exerted the greatest influence on upper limit temperature and resistivity at room temperature. Because the current-voltage properties of the composites were not ohmic in the high voltage range, researchers assumed a nongraphic mechanism--tunneling--of conduction. 30 refs.
