generally speaking, the separation in energy of a low-lying triplet state from a diamagnetic ground state has been estimated by measurements of the magnetic susceptibility of the solid compound over a broad temperature range (typically 5-300 k). the authors report an alternative way to obtain such data that is more convenient, sensitive, and widely applicable for samples in the solid state and solution. they also report results for two important classes of compounds and important conclusions to be drawn therefrom, such as the delta -electron contribution to the barrier to rotation about the mo-mo quadruple bond
