anisotropy of the linear magnetooptical effects in highly symmetric dielectric crystals

the combined influence of linear and quadratic magnetooptical constants on the faraday effect and the cotton-mouton effect (cme) in cubic dielectric crystals is studied. it is shown that in the cme the different of the refractive index is a function of the angle of orientation of the magnetic field relative to the crystallographic axes. it is established that in cubic crystals pure circular birefringence for the faraday geometry is possible only when the orientation of the magnetic field is along the four body diagonals of the cube: in classes o, o/sub h/, and t/sub d/, it is still possible along three fourth-order axes
