measurements of the cotton-mouton effect of cyclopropane over a range of temperature (=260-400k) and pressure (=50-600 kpa) are reported. an analysis of the temperature dependence shows that at normal temperatures the temperature-independent contribution, which arises from distortion of the electronic structure by the magnetic field, is not negligible in comparison with the temperature-dependent contribution from molecular orientation. a definitive value of the molecular magnetic anisotropy is obtained (10/sup 20/deltachi/jt/sup -2/=-19.2 +or- 1.9) and this, in combination with the known electric quadrupole moment and molecular geometry, enables other magnetic properties to be derived
