a parallel is drawn between saturated absorption and photon echo techniques in view of their application to atomic collision studies in low pressure gases. photon echo characteristics are examined in the case of stimulated photon echo and in the case of conventional photon echo. a few recent experimental results are surveyed briefly. the extension of the photon echo method to the study of quasi-resonant inelastic collisions is also considered
