studies of birefringence in transverse electric fields (kerr effect) or magnetic fields (cotton-mouton effect), which are comparatively simple from the experimental viewpoint, make it possible to obtain valuable information on the structure of organic compounds. from the theoretical viewpoint, these phenomena are explained almost completely by purely orientational effects (langevin-born theory), the contributions of which amount to about 99percent . the quantum-chemical calculation of the constants /sub m/k and /sub m/c reduces to the calculation of the components of the tensor of the diamagnetic susceptibility and the polarizability. a procedure for this calculation, based on the use of the combined version of perturbation theory in the mo lcao scf method was developed earlier and this procedure is now used to find the kerr and cotton-mouton constants
