the installation of local area networks (lans) with cd-roms is no longer a novelty. many institutions have successfully implemented cd-rom lans in many different configurations, some of which are home-grown but most of which are commercially available products many vendors offer software or hardware solutions. the question today becomes 'what network{' rather than 'why network{' the author examines some of the software and hardware solutions which include' cd-rom servers, cd-rom jukeboxes and multidrive units, remote access options, high-density pcs, wide area network remote access via gateways, wan drives and hybrid configurations. problems in providing dial-up access to remote users are also discussed
