summary form only given. the computer-based examination (cbx) research project was developed by the national board of medical examiners (nbme) to better assess the competence of physicians. the examination software simulates an actual patient encounter and requires the physician, without the help of listed answers, to define the management strategies necessary for optimal care. within the next year, this examination format will be implemented under test conditions at a limited number of schools for junior medical students. as part of these plans, more extensive feedback will be given. for instance, the actual examinee transaction list can now be evaluated by a clerkship director. this review would allow evaluation of an examinee's step-by-step behavior in the care of a particular simulated patient. furthermore, profiles of examinee behavior can be constructed
