the widespread acceptance of the local area network (lan) coupled with the need to provide network connectivity across several physical locations has led to increased usage of the structure of interconnected packet networks called an 'internet'. unfortunately, there is a scarcity of experimental data on the traffic statistics of such networks. while there is some understanding of the statistics of some traditional network services such as virtual terminals and file transport, the higher bandwidth available from current lan technology is fostering numerous additional network services (e.g. network-based disks, database transactions, distributed computation, etc.) for which there is little or no data these statistics are critical information for the researchers and designers of network components. the authors describe several methods for collecting some of these important internet statistics
