the author discusses effects caused by crystalline-electric field (cef) splitting of the rare earth (re) ion in re systems. the effect on the transport properties, especially the thermoelectric power when the matrix is metallic is of special interest. when the matrix is a superconductor, the cef splitting suppresses the superconductivity. examples involving magnetic fields are included, such as the rotations of the phonon-polarization vectors or cotton-mouton effect
