fabrication of a band pass filter using graphite/aluminum metal matrix composite

the use of graphite/aluminum metal matrix composite for microwave electronics packaging has been investigated. to demonstrate the capabilities of this material, a function-mode cavity band pass filter was designed, fabricated, assembled, and tested. results have been excellent, showing that the material can be easily machined and silver plated. the filter has demonstrated 52 percent and 16 percent reductions in weight and size, respectively, as compared to a existing production filter. the project has shown that graphite/aluminum composite has the potential for use in microwave electronics packaging. this is very significant since metal matrix composites are the only materials that met all three primary requirements for microelectronics packaging' low density, low coefficient of thermal expansion, and high thermal conductivity
