a plating procedure was developed to deposit ni-p, nickel and gold on an optical glass fiber. the surface treatment and the plating parameters were optimized to obtain good metal-to-glass adhesion. results indicate that adhesion is essentially determined by the number of chemical groups created on the carbon layer during the oxidation treatment. the tensile strength of the metallized pigtail increases when the oxidation time, or the electrolytic ni or au layer thickness increases, or when the electroless ni layer thickness decreases. a pull force of more than 1000 g is routinely obtained on soldered metallized pigtails
