the author reviews the complex of problems in ridding printed circuit boards of residues of soldering flux which have arisen through the introduction of surface mounting, commonly with components on both surfaces of the board, the increasing size and reduced pin centres of integrated circuits, accompanied by fine pitch technology and aggravated by the impending prohibition of the use of environmentally dangerous fluorcarbon washing agents. he discusses the properties of these latter and the extent of their elimination to date, the composition and properties of alternative solvents, including those with water base, the composition and properties of fluxes and soldering pastes, and the elimination of washing altogether
