experimental investigations were carried out to study the effects of shot peening on the fatigue life of a ni-based superalloy, designated as ew 868, which is used in aircraft engines for the manufacture of cooling shells, chambers, nozzles etc. shot peening is imparted to the material in the fabrication process to improve the fatigue life of the components. it was observed that increasing the peening time increased the compressive residual stress on the surface of the material, but this reached a saturation point after a certain level. shot peening also introduced surface roughness. the endurance limit increased with shot peening time however, because of the surface roughness effects, shot peening beyond an optimum time was not advantageous. this optimum peening time was found to be around 20 minutes in the case of the superalloy investigated
