ferroelectric liquid-crystal (flcs) cells with stable and switchable twisted states have been fabricated. examination of various ferroelectric liquid-crystal substances shows that both the cholesteric and smectic-a phases are essential in obtaining good alignment in the chiral smectic-c phase. degrees of alignments with various surface treatments and the resulting electro-optic bistability have been successfully evaluated by using a bipolar pulse method. using different surface treatments on each side (in which only one side of two glass substrates coated with polyimide was rubbed) results in the best possible alignment and bistability based on these results, 200*300 pixel multiplexed ferroelectric displays have been fabricated. although these switching states are twisted states, it shows good contrast and bistability at a multiplexing level of 200'1
