ultrasmooth and supersmooth are unquantified descriptors commonly used to indicate surfaces with a smoothness near the limit of the current state of the art. such limits usually exceed the state of confirmed, describable technology. they are produced by a process that is an art, and as such can be demonstrated but are often not completely capable of being described or reproduced from following a description. the author describes an approach to such processing, primarily from an optical fabricator's viewpoint certain features of surfaces that should be considered in the finest polishing and testing are then reviewed. a brief discussion is then given of testing, mechanisms for surface preparation, theories of polishing micromechanics, and techniques
